"Principality helped me buy my perfect ring"
I was 19 when I got engaged to my boyfriend back in 1970.
And I knew exactly what I wanted – a sapphire and diamond ring, similar to Princess Diana’s but on a much smaller scale! I’d seen it in the window of Waltham’s Jewellers on St Mary’s Street in Cardiff. It cost £35.
We knew we couldn’t afford the ring straightaway so we opened a savings account at Principality’s Queen Street branch. There were no computers in those days and all of the entries were handwritten in a small red passbook. We regularly squirreled away as much as we could afford and I anxiously counted down the weeks to the day when we could buy my perfect ring.
We married at St Peters Church on a foggy day in 1972.
