"I set my heart on a flat in a communal block"
When I was looking to buy my first property in 1968, a mortgage proved very hard to come by. The problem was that the flat I’d set my heart on was in a communal block and didn’t have its own external front door.

"Principality helped us to build a future together"
My boyfriend and I started saving for our wedding from the minute I graduated from University. A traditional big white wedding was my dream and we started putting away around £1,500 a month into a Principality account.

"I got my first car at the age of 17"
I was a pretty good saver as a child, helped by the Principality’s passbook system. It was lovely to see the account balance instantly increase and to get interest for free!

"A 1950s ex-council house was perfect for us"
When my wife and I got married last year, we expected to have to wait a year or so before being able to afford the home we wanted to raise a family in.

"Principality looks after three generations of our family"
I opened an account with Principality because I was a friend of the Carmarthen branch manager – we’d been at Sunday School together.

"I remember a fishpond full of goldfish"
In the late 1920s and early 1930s, my mother would take me into Cardiff on the tram, which stopped outside Principality on Queen Street. We would always pop in.

"I always saved my loose change"
I’ve been a customer of Principality for around 40 years, ever since I walked into the Denbigh branch carrying a whisky bottle full of coins.

"Principality helped me buy my perfect ring"
I was 19 when I got engaged to my boyfriend back in 1970. And I knew exactly what I wanted - a sapphire and diamond ring.

"I've never had any reason to move from Principality"
When my grandfather died in 1977, he left me money in a Principality Building Society passbook account. I was six years old at the time and, from then on, a Principality customer.

"One thing that hasn't changed is the community spirit"
I’ve worked for the Society for 30 years and in that time have seen an incredible level of change. In 1980, everything was done manually. We didn’t have calculators, let alone computers. All the adding up was done in our heads although we did have one machine which had a tally roll on it.
