The Welsh junior rowing squad has scooped 5 gold medals and 3 silver medals to take the Junior Men’s Team trophy for the first time ever by Wales in the Home International Regatta, with a little help from Principality Building Society.
The regatta has been held every year since 1962 and sees England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales competing against each other at junior and senior level. All countries take it in turns to host the tournament, and this year it was held in Cork in Ireland.
To mark Principality’s 150th birthday, the Welsh building society has pledged to complete 150 community commitments by the end of the year, and as part of this, sponsored the junior team’s kit.
Principality Building Society marketing director, James Wright, said: “We are delighted to be able to support the Welsh junior team and be a part of their historic victory.
“Already this year, our staff across Wales have redeveloped a garden at Rookwood hospital in Cardiff, painted playground games and equipment, built a garden area in Butetown community centre, provided goodie bags and ice-creams to reward walkers taking part in Llanelli’s Festival of Walks, sponsored a hole at the Vale of Glamorgan Junior Golf Academy and helped a primary school in Wrexham to improve its outdoor facilities. We also have lots more exciting projects to come.”
Lead coach for the boy’s squad, Robin Fletcher, said: “We were confident about the strength and competitiveness of the 2010 Welsh junior teams this year, and due to the team’s first class commitment and professional preparation we broke all records.
“Principality was a great support, and played a part in maintaining the “team spirit” theme of our journey.”
