Green fingered Principality staff get gardening at Butetown Community Centre
Local residents of Butetown community will be able to sit back and relax in the newly landscaped garden at their popular community centre this summer, thanks to a team of willing volunteers from Principality’s Head Office.
Organised by Business in the Community’s employee volunteering initiative, staff at Wales’ largest building society rolled up their sleeves at Butetown Community Centre in Cardiff Bay, to renovate the garden and transform it into a colourful and friendly environment for the residents to enjoy.
Built in the 1940s, the Centre was in need of a fresh coat of paint, the garden needed weeding and a new fence was required to hide the unsightly metal railings, testing the team’s “Groundforce” skills.
Principality’s Oliver Dickinson, who led the team, said: “We are delighted to be able to improve and support local communities across Wales and were even more delighted to have succeeded in this particular challenge. With the weather brightening up, we are confident that local Butetown residents will now have a safe haven to enjoy the sunshine.
“This year we are celebrating 150 years of being at the heart of communities up and down the country and we are committed to continuing to make a real difference to these communities now and in the future.”
Betty Campbell, a member of the Butetown Community Resident’s Association, thanked Principality and its staff for their generosity, saying: “The Centre is used by the community in both an artistic and a social sense, but the garden at the back has been a real eyesore. We are thrilled that the area has been cleaned up so that everyone can enjoy it again – after all, that is what a garden is for.”
Butetown Community Centre is run by a voluntary committee of dedicated people from the local community. Their aim is to enhance the quality of life for local people by providing educational, recreational, health, well-being and leisure opportunities. A place where people can meet, learn and socialize in a safe and friendly environment.
